Description

From the 13th till the 16th century, Čazma was an auxiliary center of the Zagreb diocese, which included a good part of Croatia. The Čazman medieval fortress is located on the central square of the Čazman Chapter, and today only the remains of the walls are visible.

It is a square hill with artificially trimmed edges (100 m west of the parish church of St. Mary Magdalene), a place where there used to be a castle and possibly a bishop's palace. It is not excluded that the palace was fortified with walls and towers built during the civil war between Archduke Ferdinand and Duke Zapolje (Vlach prince), whose ban was Šimun Bakač de Erdedy (1530-1534) and whose seat was in the area: “Ex castro meo Chasmensi”. The castle was shaped like a regular quadrangle with towers at the corners. Such an architectural structure points to a Renaissance conception whose initiator is, presumably, Simon Erdedy. Today, on the site of the hillfort, there is a building of the former company of the Military Frontier, built after the restoration and fortification of Čazma between 1604 and 1610 (today the Homeland Museum).
