Description

The beautiful church of St. Peter in Ivanić-Grad, located in the city park, due to its rich interior, was declared a cultural property in 2004 by a decision of the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Croatia.

The history of the church dates back to the past of Ivanić, when there was a defensive fortress in Ivanić for the defense of Zagreb from the Turks from the east, in which there was a military chapel dedicated to St. John the Baptist, later renamed St. Ivan Kapistran (a Franciscan prominent in the fights against the Turks). Around the fortress, with the settlement of the civilian population, especially craftsmen, a settlement was created. For their spiritual needs, a wooden chapel of St. Petra, which was located on the outside of the fortress (under the administration of the parish of Kloštar Ivanić).

Today the church is adorned with a large main altar dedicated to St. Peter and two side - one dedicated to the Mother of God, the other to St. Florian (and every year firefighters attend Mass on St. Florian's Day to protect and bless their work). Next to the altar on the left is a beautiful baptistery with the motif of the baptism of Jesus. The two pulpits on the right bear witness to ancient times and imposing size and shape. They carry the motifs of Mary Magdalene and the Lost Son. It is also nice to look at the tomb of Jesus on the right right at the entrance to the church which is a faithful depiction of the dead Christ. The Way of the Cross is also from that time which is thus completely in accordance with the inventory of the church. The church is painted with many paintings (the author also mentions the Italian painter Leonardo Marotti), in the style of eclecticism (elements from neo-baroque to secession), and the iconography included scenes from the Gospels, the Old and New Testaments, the life of Christ, depictions of the Church Fathers and apostles . Many believers testify that no matter how many people come to church, they always find new motives and something they have not seen before. The church is illuminated by stained glass windows, one of which is of a more recent date with the image of Blessed Alojzije Stepinac, but in complete harmony with the style of the church.
