Description

The Franciscan monastery and church in Kloštar Ivanić forms a unique monumental architectural complex. According to the testimony of the year engraved in the Renaissance coat of arms above the main portal of the church, the builder of the church and monastery was the Bishop of Zagreb Luka Baretin, and he completed his work in 1508. This large Gothic church, dedicated to St. John the Baptist, was later baroqued.

In the Gothic sanctuary of the church that perished for II. World War II there are carefully carved consoles. The wooden altars, statues and pulpits were baroque. The Franciscans were invited to the monastery by Bishop Luka Baretin, but around the middle of the 15th century they left the monastery, which became a defensive fortress in the wars with the Turks.
The monastery and the church, as well as Kloštar Ivanić, suffered several times from the Turks, and the fire caused by the negligence of the Krajina army in 1572 caused them the most damage. The monastery and the church were repaired and redecorated for Bishop Franjo Ergeljski. In the 17th century, the Franciscans came again and thoroughly repaired the monastery, mostly through the efforts of Elezar Boren. Three cast bells were placed in the church bell tower, a new organ was purchased, five more altars were installed, and the windows of the church were changed and all the altars were gilded again.
